Hypor Canada Customer Growing in Tough Times

December 2006

Hypor would like to congratulate its customers, Big Sky Farms Inc, and Optimum Genetics L.P. on the openings of their new barns. Both barns represent new fill for Hypor.

Optimum Genetics L.P. is formed by the partnership of Groupe Brochu and Mario Côté, who were both already Hypor customers. “We are especially pleased that the new Optimum Genetics barn will be the first production structure in Canada to use the Hypor C and D lines. In addition, this barn is a stepping stone for Hypor’s entry into the USA as a portion of the production has been dedicated for the US market,” said Hypor Sales Manager, Canada Eric Aubin. The new barn is located south of Ottawa in Ontario.

At the same time, Hypor customer Big Sky celebrated the opening of Big Sky VII Beaver Plain Unit, a 6,000 sow unit in Pelly, Saskatchewan. This is big Sky’s 49th site in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and will be staffed by 23 full-time employees. “Big Sky is the top producing company in the North American Benchmarking program,” said CEO Florian Possberg, “This is a tribute to our employees, but part of the credit also goes to the performance of our Hypor animals.” Big Sky is recognized as a leader in the Canadian hog industry and is the 3rd largest Hog producer in Canada.

Although there is a downturn in the Canadian hog industry, Hypor customers are still seeing growth. “In this cyclical industry, everybody enjoys success when the industry is at the top of cycle. However, as we move into lower prices, margins are squeezed and only those producers with high performing animals and efficient systems can eliminate some of the volatility and continue to grow,” said Aubin, “Both Optimum Genetics and Big Sky are testament to this, especially with the opening of their new barns. Hypor is proud of their growth and success.”
